Origin:
A diminutive member of the ancient Spitz family, the miniature version of the American Eskimo has all the appealing qualities of the larger Eskie but in a small package. The breed was first registered in the U.S. in 1913 by the United Kennel Club and the name of American Eskimo was adopted in 1917. Though relatively rare for many years, they have grown tremendously in popularity in the last two decades.
Temperament:
Eskies are fun-loving dogs that are gentle and playful with children. They love to work and are eager to please. In recent years they have proven to be successful competitors in obedience and flyball as well as other performance activities.
Activity Level:
The breed enjoys running and playing. They like to keep active and are willing participants in active sports.
Height/Weight:
The Miniature Eskie male should range from 12-15 in (30-38 cm) at the shoulder.
Coat:
The luxurious outer coat is thick, fairly long and stands off from the body while the undercoat is soft and close-fitting.
Colour:
Pure white is the preferred colour, although white with biscuit cream is permissible.
Grooming:
The gleaming white coat of the Eskie has a natural oil that helps keep it clean, but the dog does require periodic bathing. Eskies shed once a year, in the spring, and it is especially important to brush them regularly at this time to reduce matting.
