Origin:
(not recognized by The Canadian Kennel Club) When the Bulldog of 19th-century Britain was transplanted to American soil, it kept its original form while its English counterpart underwent significant changes. With its instincts and form intact, the breed easily switched from bull baiting to handling tough range cattle on the American frontier. Over the last century, the breed has remained relatively true to type and still resembles the Bulldog of bygone days.
Temperament:
Tough and versatile, agile and athletic, the American Bulldog is an intelligent animal that benefits from socialization and early obedience training. He may be aloof with strangers and display assertiveness toward other dogs.
Activity Level:
This sturdy, well-muscled dog has a definite need to work.
Height/Weight:
Height varies considerably in this breed, ranging from 19-27 in (48-69 cm) while weight may be anything from 60-120 lb (27-54 kg).
Coat:
The breed sports a short, stiff coat.
Colour:
The colours are white, white with brindle or tan markings.
Grooming:
The American Bulldog is basically a 'wash-and-wear' dog.
