Origin:
The English Shepherd descends from British Collie and shepherd stock, brought by setters to the New World. Valued for its working skills, the English Shepherd has long been used for controlling stock of any type (cattle, sheep, hogs, poultry) and guarding property. Fanciers claim the breed is the closest modern equivalent to the old-type British shepherd dogs.
Temperament:
The English Shepherd is alert, responsive and level-headed. A biddable breed, it is also capable of thinking for itself when required. It is noted for being devoted family dog.
Activity Level:
Like all working dogs, this breed needs a job to do and is happiest when kept busy. Regular outdoor exercise is a necessity for this hardy dog. The English Shepherd makes an excellent companion for active families.
Height/Weight:
The English Shepherd is a medium to medium-large dog, standing 18-23 in (46-58 cm) at the shoulder and weighing 40-75 lb (18-34 kg).
Coat:
The coat is medium long.
Colour:
English Shepherds come in a variety of colour combinations. The most common are black-and-tan, sable-and-white, black-and-white or tri-colour.
Grooming:
Regular brushing is sufficient to keep the coat healthy and mat-free.
