Coton de Tulear

Provided By: Dogs in Canada, Dogs in Canada

Origin:

(on Canadian Kennel Club Miscellaneous list) The Royal Dog of Madagascar traces its history to the city of Tulear. Its enchanting personality and soft, cottony coat made it a favourite with French nobility there as far back as the 15th century. Recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) since 1971, the breed has been slowly gaining in popularity worldwide.

Temperament:

The Coton is boisterous, merry and a bit of a clown. It is inclined to become very attached to its owner.

Activity Level:

Eager, alert and intelligent, the Coton is an entertaining companion whose small size makes him an ideal apartment dog.

Height/Weight:

An adult Coton stands just 10-12.5 in (25-32 cm) at the shoulder and weighs 9-14 lb (4-6.5 kg).

Coat:

Coton is French for cotton and describes the coat that gives the breed its name. It is soft, fine and slightly wavy with a cottony texture.

Colour:

The coat is always white, although a few yellow or grey patches, notably on the ears, are tolerated.

Grooming:

Weekly brushing keeps the fluffy coat free from mats. Minimal shedding makes the Coton a possible choice for allergy sufferers.
