Collie (Rough)

Provided By: Dogs in Canada, Dogs in Canada

Origin:

A native of Scotland, the Rough Collie is believed to have descended from herding dogs brought to Britain at the time of the Roman invasion. The breed has been mentioned in writings dating back to the 14th century. It was used primarily as a herding dog. The breed owes its initial popularity to Queen Victoria who brought some of the breed back from Scotland and installed them in the royal kennels at Windsor. Then along came the popular books of Albert Payson Terhune and 'Lassie' of movie and TV fame and the breed surged into the hearts of North Americans. It is believed that a cross to the Borzoi gave the breed its long, aristocratic head.

Temperament:

Kindly, loyal and trainable, the Rough Collie is affectionate and makes a fine family companion.

Activity Level:

A practical choice for the suburbs or country, the Rough Collie needs regular outdoor exercise. Though not an excitable dog, it enjoys attention and activity.

Height/Weight:

An adult may measure from 22-26 in (56-66 cm) at the shoulder and weigh from 50-75 lb (22.5-34 kg).

Coat:

The Rough Collie's crowning glory is its harsh, straight and abundant outer coat. However, the coat is short and smooth on the head and legs. Underneath the glamorous outer coat, the Rough Collie wears a soft, furry, dense undercoat.

Colour:

The acceptable colours are sable and white, blue merle and white, sable merle and white, tri-colour and predominantly white with coloured markings.

Grooming:

The coat needs frequent, thorough brushing to remove dead hair and keep the undercoat from matting. The breed needs extra attention at seasonal shedding times.
