Origin:
(not recognized by The Canadian Kennel Club) The regal Akbash has been used to guard flocks of sheep and goats against attacks of wolves, bears and jackals in Turkey since biblical times.
Temperament:
Though aloof with strangers, the Akbash is dedicated and devoted to its owners. A calm dog with stately deportment, it is quiet by nature. However, the Akbash possesses intelligence, fearless courage and a protective instinct.
Activity Level:
This breed has a low rate of metabolism making it an 'energy efficient' dog. Though content to live with and quietly watch over livestock, it can move with astounding speed and agility when the need arises.
Height/Weight:
Tall and long-limbed, a mature male may be as much as 29-32 in (74-81 cm) at the shoulder while females are noticeably smaller at 27-30 in (69-76 cm). Look for males in good condition to tip the scales at 100-130 lb (45-58.5 kg).
Coat:
There are two coat varieties. The long-coated Akbash carries a long outer coat that varies from straight to wavy and is most prominent on the ruff, the back of the forelegs, thighs and tail. The medium-coated dog has a sleek, smooth-coated appearance as the coarse, outer coat lies flat.
Colour:
The Akbash is an all-white dog. However, a light biscuit colour on the ears, ridge line or in the undercoat is acceptable.
Grooming:
Coarse and non-matting, the Akbash coat requires a minimum of grooming.
