Cairn Terrier

Provided By: Dogs in Canada, Dogs in Canada

Origin:

Short-legged, game and tenacious little terriers have been known in the Western Highlands and Islands of Scotland for over 500 years. The stronghold of the Cairn Terrier was the Isle of Skye and the breed was first exhibited in 1909 as Short-haired Skyes. Skye Terrier fanciers immediately objected and the breed was renamed as the Cairn Terrier, taking its new name from the piles of rock it often had to traverse in pursuit of vermin.

Temperament:

Fanciers call the Cairn 'the best little pal in the world.' Though they may be feisty with other dogs, Cairns thrive on human companionship and are happy and outgoing.

Activity Level:

The Cairn is an active, game, hardy little terrier that is loaded with spunk. He gets by nicely on moderate exercise.

Height/Weight:

Adults should be 11-12 in (28-31cm) at the withers and weigh 14-16 lb (6-7.5 kg).

Coat:

The outer coat is harsh and weather resistant. The undercoat is short, soft, furry and close.

Colour:

Cream, wheaten, red, grey or nearly black. Brindling in all these colours is acceptable. Not solid black, or white, or black and tan. Dark ears, muzzle and tail tip are desirable.

Grooming:

Regular grooming removes dead hair. Some hand-stripping may be necessary to keep the outline neat.
