Origin:
The fighting bull-and-terrier breeds of the 1800s spawned the more peaceable AmStaff. In its formative years, the breed was known as the Yankee Terrier, the Half-and-Half or the American Bull Terrier. It was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936 as the Staffordshire Terrier but the name was changed to American Staffordshire Terrier in 1972 to avoid confusing it with the smaller Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Temperament:
Bright, alert and courageous, the AmStaff is a great family pet, but, because of his terrier nature, early obedience training is recommended.
Activity Level:
No couch potato, the AmStaff needs regular outdoor exercise to maintain its solid, athletic condition.
Height/Weight:
The average male measures about 18-19 in (46-48 cm) at the shoulder. Weight should be in proportion for this stocky dog.
Coat:
The coat is short, stiff and glossy.
Colour:
Any colour - solid, parti or patched - is permissible. All white or more than 80 per cent is frowned upon, as is black-and-tan or liver.
Grooming:
Grooming needs are minimal.
