Origin:
Some have speculated that the Russian Blue originated from the northern parts of Scandinavia and Russia. Once named the Archangel cat, the breed might have descended from ships' cats brought from the Russian port of Archangel to Britain in the 19th century. In Russia, newlywed brides received gifts engraved with the Russian Blue's handsome face as a token for good luck.
Temperament:
A devoted, gentle and playful breed, the Russian Blue is cautious and slightly reserved around strangers. Known to be intelligent, docile and affectionate, he proves to be an ideal indoor cat.
Height/Weight:
The Russian Blue balances beauty and strength, having a lithe slender body packed firm with muscle. Weight ranges from 7-12 lb (3-3.5 kg).
Coat:
Its luxuriously rich coat and vivid, emerald-green eyes are distinctive. The Russian Blue's luminous appearance comes from it's silver-tipped guard hairs. Its double coat is like seal fur: dense and plush. British cats seem to have retained the 'blue' nose and pads. Lavender pink or mauve pads and a slate-grey nose are found in the U.S.
