Persian

Provided by: Dogs in Canada, Dogs in Canada

Origin:

To many people, the Persian epitomizes the purebred cat and it has a long history in the cat fancy, appearing regularly in cat shows for over 100 years. No one is quite sure where or how the first long-haired cats originated, but they were first reported in Europe toward the end of the 16th century, having come from Angora in Turkey. Others followed from Persia (now Iran). They were first referred to as Angoras, then Persians.

Temperament:

Persians are noted for their placid, gentle temperament and quiet, melodious voices.

Height/Weight:

The Persian has a massive cobby body, short legs and a broad, round head with a short, snub and broad nose. The large, round eyes are set wide apart. The small, rounded ears are set low on the head. The tail is short and full but in proportion to body length.

Colour:

The Persian's crowning glory is exceptionally full, long, soft and woolly. The Persian comes in many 'flavours,' from solid colours, such as blue, red, cream, black and white, to tabby, bicolour, smoke, cameo, calico, tortoiseshell, blue-cream, shaded silver, chinchilla and many others.
