Cornish Rex

Provided by: Dogs in Canada, Dogs in Canada

Origin:

The Cornish Rex's heritage has been a bit of a mystery. The wavy-coated breed arose as a spontaneous genetic mutation, the result of a mating between a tortie-and-white farm cat and an unknown father in Cornwall, England, in the 1950s. When the kitten was mated back to its mother, the resulting litter included two more curly coats. The breed was named the Cornish Rex after its county of origin and the likeness of its coat to that of the Astrex rabbit. Another Rex was found in Devon, England, in 1966 but it proved to be a genetically distinct breed and is now known as the Devon Rex. A success in the cat world, the Cornish Rex is eligible to compete in cat shows by all North American registries.

Temperament:

Belying the myth that cats are haughty and aloof, this breed is affectionate, playful, intelligent and likes to be handled. The breed is also very accommodating for those who like their cat to do double-time as a dog. The Rex will retrieve!

Height/Weight:

The Cornish Rex is slender and fine-boned.

Colour:

The unique, short and wavy coat sheds very little. It comes in a variety of colours.
