Origin:
The Munchkin is a short-legged cat, the result of a natural mutation. It is one of the newest breeds of cat, tracing its origins to a black short-legged cat named 'Blackberry,' found living under a pickup truck in Louisiana in 1983. It was first exhibited at a cat show in 1991 and was accepted for new breed status in 1995.
Temperament:
Munchkins are outgoing and respond well to being handled. The Munchkin is a playful, sweet, social and easy-going cat. The Munchkin has been known to stand on its hind legs like a prairie dog to get a better look at something.
Height/Weight:
A small to medium-sized cat, it has distinctive short legs that may have slight bowing of the long bones. The cat often stands higher in the back.
Colour:
There are two varieties Munchkins - long and short coated. The long-coated variety has a ruff and shaggy britches. All colours, patterns and markings are permissible.
