Abyssinian

Provided by: Dogs in Canada, Dogs in Canada

Origin:

Thought by many to be the oldest known short-haired cat breed, the Abyssinian is believed to be the original Egyptian cat, since mummified remains of felines with the Aby's unique colouring have been found. Conflicting theories have been put forth about the breed's beginnings with one authority claiming the Aby is descended from the Caracal lynx, which has been known to mate with tame cats. Others tend to believe the Aby of today is the result of careful crossbreeding of selected cats native to Britain.

Temperament:

Playful and spirited, Abys are affectionate and intelligent but not demonstrative unless it suits them. Some owners have described the breed as 'dog-like.' They love attention from their owners. Its voice is sometimes called 'bell-like.'

Height/Weight:

This medium-sized lithe and graceful cat has a long and slender body. The tail is longish, tapering and whiplike. The ears are sharp and comparatively broad at the base. The Abyssinian bears a striking resemblance to the cats revered by the ancient Egyptians.

Colour:

His 'ticked' coat, unique among felines, has been compared to that of a wild rabbit. The appearance is caused by two or three bands of brown or black pigment on every hair. The recognized colours in the breed are ruddy, sorrel, blue and fawn.
