About the renovation:

Spectacular is the only way to describe this dramatic transformation completed by BiglarKinyan Design. The designers began by taking inspiration from the homeowner’s contemporary furniture and set a goal to capture the grandeur of this large open concept home. Enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of the kitchen, master ensuite and powder room have increased the overall appeal of this house, located in Toronto.

Like the other rooms, the spacious kitchen had great promise for much beautification and improved functionality.

The builder: BiglarKinyan Design Partnership

Construction details:

  • Bathroom redesign
  • Powder room renovation
  • Kitchen remodel

The kitchen after

The kitchen after

Notable within the design, is a contrast of solid massing and void that serve to create interest without causing the design to look too traditional.

Granite island and bar

An integrated desk with bookshelf and canopy, glass hutch, and cantilevered Delicatus granite bar used as an eating area make this kitchen as practical as it is beautiful.

Miralis semi-custom maple cabinets were used with a custom stain developed by the designers. Their goal was to tie together pre-existing wood floors in adjacent areas with the cabinetry using a timeless colour that had the depth and richness of cherry.

The choice of appliances were one way that Biglarkinyan Design ‘value-engineered’ this project. Fardid Biglar explains that a high-end professional Viking range-top and Dacor Millenium Series appliances were used in conjunction with an inexpensive full Electrolux freezer and full fridge bolted together to average cost to a mid-range price point but with high-end look and quality.

The goal of this redesign was to create a luxurious spa-like space with qualities that are timeless. Details like the playful yellow and blue tiles were swapped for elegance and sophistication.

Elegance and airyness

Canopies and valances separate areas of different activity to bring down the scale of this capacious bathroom while over-sized beveled mirrors maintain the airy openness.

The powder room before

The powder room before

Changes for the powder room were planned to make it equally impressive as the ensuite - but it would be a whole different story.

'Since most people only use their powder rooms occasionally, it is the perfect room to show off the dramatic side of you,' Mr. Biglar explained.

The powder room after

The powder room after

BiglarKinyan Design opted for a low angle recessed light to make the lighting more dramatic in order to showcase a unique glittery wallpaper from Metro Wallcoverings that contributes to the drama of the design. They still wanted a space that was timeless and easy to like, so a light colour floor and practical plumbing fixtures make it enjoyable even by guests who have more conservative tastes.
