About the renovation:

This ranch-style bungalow, located in the picturesque town of Oro Medonte in Simcoe County was a labour of love that became both the dream and stunning show home of the builder-owner. The 1900 square-feet residence on 3 acres was constructed in 1975. This was all too apparent when first purchased, right down to the kitschy details. After four months, the interior of the home was completely re-built, and it took about two summers to complete the outdoor area that included a beautiful in-ground pool and serene koi pond. The open concept main floor of the house perpetuated the exotic contemporary Asian-influenced style, which plays magnificently throughout the entire residence.

The whole house was gutted, the staircase was moved, and the kitchen was opened up into the family room. The old windows and doors were replaced with Jeld-Win windows and doors; several exterior doors and two bay windows added. The former, dingy two bedroom apartment in the basement was converted into a fancy new office that featured: recessed lighting, crown molding, a custom built-in bookcase under the stairs and a full wall of cabinetry. The downstairs also houses a home gym, full bathroom, and three bedrooms – perfect for overnight guests.

Ron Bowler and his wife Cheryl designed everything themselves, with Ron completing the majority of the construction. The show home has been featured in magazines as well as popular daytime show, Cityline; such kudos much deserved for the once dated structure that was truly reborn as a divine living space.

The Builder: Natural Elements.

Construction details:

  • gutted entire house down to the exterior studs
  • all interior walls were removed or moved including the stairwell
  • beams installed in the attic space to take the place of the load bearing walls
  • added a bay window to the master bedroom, and bricked in old windows
  • all plumbing and wiring removed and updated
  • new hardwood flooring installed throughout

Budget:

The interior renovation was $112,000.00 and the backyard was $150,000.00

The owners didn’t just have form to consider (when they were deciding on new flooring) but also function as they had two very large (but loving) Bull Mastiffs that would likely cause much wear and tear.

Dark, multi-toned brown Cumaru hard wood flooring was chosen for its richly varied hues that integrated well with each section of the main floor. As much as it provides aesthetics, its characteristic hardness and durability is crucial for standing up to any four-legged friction.

Looking at this old kitchen, it’s almost difficult to visualize the modern leap it will make decades into the future – in a matter of months.

The black maple kitchen was customized to meet the owners needs; from the extra tall smoked glass door, upper cabinetry that was brought to the ceiling to create height in the room, to the raised appliances that minimize the need for bending down to reach.

Appliances are Maytag and Kitchen Aid, but the sculpture-esque “Zephyr” overhead exhaust fan made of stainless steel and glass was the splurge purchase, imported from Italy.

The Louisiana limestone pebbles that create the surface of kitchen island front are the same ones installed in the shelving unit in the living room above the fireplace. The granite top of the island is also reflected in the the face of the fireplace.

The original eat-in kitchen would be nothing compared to the new dining room; with a refined setting, it would be fit for formal sittings yet a bright, sun-lit atmosphere would also suit any dining occasion.

The dining room was painted a soft green (Camouflage, Benjamin Moore), carried throughout the main floor; a subtle backdrop to the rich wood flooring.

The old field stone fireplace was to be torn out and replaced with granite slab that would match the new kitchen counters and back splash. Not long to stay either were the cotton candy coloured walls that were rampant throughout the home.

With the new open concept area, each area flows into the next. The new granite fireplace complements the sleek kitchen surfaces. The constructed floating shelf system decorated with Louisiana limestone pebbles (also used on the kitchen island), is a beautiful way to create extra storage or showcasing space.

Bathroom after

The grand en-suite bathroom has a whirlpool and air double bathtub, surrounded by a newly installed ceiling to floor bay window (two small windows were bricked in). The bay window overlooks the pool and there is also a door that leads to the outside hot tub area. The walls (Benjamin Moore 'Straw Hat') are a neutral colour, which offsets the exotic, fossilized ammonite with Orthoceras marble accents.

The en-suite also has a stand alone dual person shower with body jets and two separate shower heads. As in the kitchen and living rooms, Louisiana limestone pebbles accentuate; along with marble tiling.
