Small spaces with plenty of foot traffic should not be left bare! Consider your hallways as an extension of any room in your house, be it your dining room, kitchen, living room, bathrooms or bedrooms.
Have fun when decorating your hallways and consider the function! Some hallways require practical elements such as storage, cabinets etc. While others can be more aesthetically pleasing. Whatever the use is, ensure that your hallway is stylish and functional for all your needs.
Hallways can sometimes be challenging to decorate around, simply because they are often awkward, narrow and don't lend themselves to everyday furniture. Nevertheless, it is essential that you make the most of these active spaces and be sure to make an impact while you are at it. Here are some design tips for tackling your hallways.
Storage:
When it comes to entryways, or hallways leading you to the front/side door, it's always great to make the most of your space by installing custom built-ins or even free standing cabinets, bins or cubbies to stash your bags, shoes, scarves and accessories. Use hooks, racks and shelves to maximize storage, stowing and hanging along your wall space.
Wall décor:
Liven up your walls with artwork, prints or family pictures. Be sure that your pieces are framed in the same type/colour frames. Using multiples of small-scale art pieces (average size 24"x36") is usually the best way to go. Oversized works of arts should be reserved to grand entryways or large rooms, since they don't lend themselves to be appreciated in narrow and awkward spaces. Mirrors are another great way to give the illusion of roominess. They are also very functional for hallways leading you to the outdoors.
Floor runners, rugs and mats:
Add colour, texture and warmth to your floors by dropping a runner down, to help define and cheer up your hallway area.
Lighting:
Make lighting an important priority. Whether it's wall sconces or a pretty chandelier, you will add personality and introduce charm with a unique or elegant light fixture.
Bring height to your hallways:
Use large plants, twigs or branches to accentuate the vertical! A lean and long item in a small space adds drama, character and attention! Make sure that these potted items don't clutter or overpower your space. The key is to keep it linear and streamline.
Add interest:
Use an interesting wallpaper, paint technique or paint colour to define this space. For hallways that require less function, consider a beautiful console, ottoman or bench. Ensure that these pieces are alluring and dramatic. Look for artistic pieces, vintage pieces and antiques to add a unique spirit to your hallway.
