This week I'm in Hong Kong shooting another episode of Let's Shop. Since my arrival, I've been reminded of the basic principles of Feng Shui and interior design, particularly the importance of balancing the five elements in each room in order to create both good Chi (energy) as well as a brilliant aesthetic.

Hong Kong room (Cheryl Gillespie)Great design is achieved when the basics are properly mixed with creativity -- one without the other will hamper success. The five basic elements of Feng Shui (fire, water, earth, wood, and metal) should always be incorporated into a space. Even if you don't follow the principles of Feng Shui, good design logic always suggests bringing diverse textures together that balance and enhance a room's atmosphere.

Textural diversity creates visual drama and excitement in a room -- all of which can be achieved by incorporating the Feng Shui elements; for example, a basic rectangular room can easily have all five elements incorporated by laying a red (fire) shag carpet on top of a wooden floor (wood) as well as adding  floor lights (fire), a metal and fabric chair (metal), a metal sculpture that holds water (water), and  fresh foliage, clay pots or a planter (earth) for a real tree. You'll then have a harmonized and balanced room.

Like good design, Feng Shui is important for bringing balance to a space. Too much of one element or texture will produce a space that is not harmonized and is off-balance, which can leave homeowners and guests alike, feeling uncomfortable. This weekend, spend some time balancing your own rooms by ensuring that all five elements are represented. You and your guests will notice the difference!
