Natural inspirations

With summer just around the corner, lawn mowers being pulled out of garages and fresh buds popping up on trees, now is as good of a time as ever to bring nature indoors. Not only is it one of the cheapest and easiest ways to accessorize, it is also one of the most tranquil and rewarding décor additions to your space. Be it a bowl of fresh lavender stems on the nightstand or a piece of driftwood as artwork on a desk, bringing Mother Nature's talent inside can leave a lasting impression.

No matter what colour or style, every room should have some green.

Place unusual leaves and twigs in a simple glass vase or purchase a unique tree to sit behind a sofa. Enjoy fresh flowers every day to add a splash of colour and a beautiful fragrance to any room. Think less clutter. A single stem can be more elegant and less predictable than a studied bouquet, not to mention more affordable.

Add nature-inspired artwork to a windowless room to create scenery.

Fill a bowl of sea sponges, coral and shells and place among towels in a bathroom. Ground candles in large glass canisters with sand, rocks or petals for a serene effect.

Go one step further and choose organic materials when designing a room. Wood floors, twig blinds, natural fibres and hemp-covered furniture can instantly make a room feel grounded and comfortable.

Everyone has favourite childhood "natural" memories — trips to the beach with grandma, mountain biking in the forest with a best friend, sitting in the garden with a glass of lemonade. All of these moments can be captured in simple ways and brought into our homes. Use these elements and materials when decorating and love your environment, inside and out.
