  • A stumper for the HVAC technicians?

    Maintenance & Repairs - 8 hours ago

    Additional Details

So I'm in an HVAC class. My lab was a unit change out. Everything was going smooth and easy, until I tried to raise the head pressure to 278 psig. The first time I got my head pressure up around 278 psig. While measuring my subcool(which was fluttering around 20 degrees) the high pressure switch cut out. After that It cut out at around 160psig. I bypassed the hi/lo pressure switches, because they kept tripping, and raised head pressure to 200 psig. Above that and the compressor cuts out while the condenser fan keeps blowing. I weighed in the charge of 5.8 lbs of R-22, like the label on the unit called for, if anything it is overcharged. I pulled a triple evac. It is not on me yet to troubleshoot this unit, but I hate failure. This one has two of my instructors suspecting different causes; bad compressor or undercharge. Any ideas? To raise the head pressure, we wrap the coils with plastic and limit airflow. I say it is overcharged because 5.8 lbs is a complete charge with 25' of lineset. This unit has approximately 19' of lineset. The evap coil was not replaced with the condenser. The TXV works fine, it maintains 10 degrees superheat. I think I got everything. The filter drier is just a standard issue. About the size of an orange. The sight glass has a few stray bubbles, which I have received mixed information on. A short time instructor said a proper charge should show no bubbles, another instructor said a proper charge would show some bubbles. The subcool number does show an undercharge...either a coolant loss or I had the scale set to kilos? I think it was a potential relay. All those little black boxes look the same, and I could not see the wiring diagram without removing it from the unit. discharge temp. was around 85-110, the higher number with higher pressure. hermetic, scroll, 208 volt, high temp, used residential unit. We have dozens of A/C's, I swapped out a 13 SEER unit for an antique 12 SEER Rheem. I don't remember the amp draw, but it did increase as pressure rose. This problem developed near the end of the day. So we didn't have time to start troubleshooting. School is closed till Monday, but I have been pondering this since last night. From the questions you have led me with, I tend to suspect the compressor. The compressor was extremely hot to the touch. I think it was a potential relay. I could not read the schematic on it. I admit I am a rookie with no practical field experience. evap pressure stays steady at 70 psig. The pressure rises to around 80 psig when head pressure is forced up to 200 psig.

  • Drywalling question(gaps and jagged sheetrock).?

Do It Yourself (DIY) - 14 hours ago

    Additional Details

I'm not sure if I make sense to you, this is hard to explain. Basically there is a hole or groove about a inch deep in the sheetrock where he failed to snap the board clean. The grove is located in the middle on the ending. Now when I tape over this I can sorta see that I'm taping over a hole in a wall. I feel like this is not the proper way to do it and it can easy be "punched" through later on. What can I do to fix this gap so I can tape over something solider and the paste?

Can you afford a new house?

Use our housing budget calculator to see if you can afford a new place to call home

By Kali Pearson

Dreaming of better digs? According to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation(CMHC), there are two main factors to consider before making that dream a reality: your income, and the amount you already owe for other loans and payments. Use our housing budget calculator to figure out the maximum amount you can spend on housing - you may be able to live larger than you think.

Our calculator tells you if your dream is feasible, but, as Andy Hammond, CMHC manager of business development says, it's only a first step. Other factors influence what you can purchase, such as the size of your down payment and current mortgage rates. And of course, you still have to cover your living expenses. "It's important to do a cash flow exercise, where you sit down with your family and decide what kind of lifestyle you want to have," says Hammond.

Canada's real estate market began cooling off in the second half of 2008 and the statistics coming out in the first few months of 2009 strongly suggest the trend will continue. According to figures released by the Canadian Real Estate Association , sales of existing homes fell by 17.1 per cent across the country in 2008 and are expected to tumble another 16.9 per cent in 2009. The association says resale home prices fell by an average of 9.6 per cent across the country in February 2009 compared to February 2008. Meanwhile, Statistics Canada reported that prices for new homes dropped by 0.8 per cent between January 2008 and January 2009. That's the first year-over-year decrease since 1997. Doesn't look good from were I stand so sell now or lose it all.......

The sooner we accept the Canadian housing market has been overcooked and needs to adjust, the better, not least because mapping out the future requires an understanding of what has happened. Canadian politicians need to accept the bursting of the property bubble as an economic coming of age and play their part in adjusting downwards expectations of wealth, wage and inflation. They must begin to focus on where we would like to be in 10 years, and not just in 10 months. The biggest mistake policymakers and politicians could make at this stage is to continue propping up the asset bubble in the property market. (30, 35, 40 year mortgages/No money down mortgages/ridiculously low interest rates/etc….) And don’t believe the housing market in Canada has improved at all. That’s just realtors and realestate related machines trying to create false hope and predictions for the future. Affordability index spells it out loud and clear. Canadians can not afford housing any more and prices will crash. That’s a fact!

The collapse of the housing market in the States has exposed the vulnerable balance sheets of many Americans. They are debt rich and asset poor. You can talk favorable demographics all you like. But the fundamental question for any housing decision is whether a borrower can make his mortgage payment. That's getting to be an expensive proposition here in Canada. There hasn't been a house price crash here, like the ones unfolding in America and Britain……YET! But affordability in the Canadian housing market is clearly a problem. Of 227 cities surveyed, found 9 Canadian cities in the top 50 of "least affordable" in the world. "There are no affordable [housing] markets in Canada and there are no moderately unaffordable markets. Five of the nine markets are rated severely unaffordable." “All of the large capital cities (Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto) are rated severely unaffordable”. Vancouver rated 8th out of 227 cities surveyed with a marginal difference between 1st and 8th place. The best ratings are seriously unaffordable in four smaller markets Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, and Halifax.
