1. Find your style. Figure out what type of items or genre you are interested in. Look around your house; you may have already started a collection without knowing it.
2. Accessibility. Pick an object that isn’t too pricey and is easy to find. You don’t want to start a collection that will leave you broke and frustrated.
3. Read up. Subscribe to any print or online collecting publications or newsletters that focus on your object(s) or interest.
4. Become an expert. Take the time to speak with any collectors, bookstore owners, gallery workers, or friends and family that have experience in collecting. They can help teach you about how to find a bargain and what you should avoid.
5. Hit the pavement. Research different antique shows, markets and galleries in your neighborhood and see what they have to offer.
6. Save space. Allocate a specific area for your new collection. It should be easy to access and in clear view so that you and your guests can enjoy them. Invest in display cases or shelves (measured to specification) for optimal beauty and protection. If your collection gets too big, put your favourites out and tuck the others away in a safe spot.
7. Set a budget. Have a rough figure of how much you would like to spend per item. This way you can factor in monthly or yearly costs.
8. Blog it. Visit different websites and blogs to network with other collectors.
9. Do your research. Before you purchase an item, speak to the buyer and inquire about its authenticity, any breaks, cracks or problems. Then ask yourself – will this item really enhance my existing collection?
10. Categorize. Group your items by colour, theme, style or time period. This way they have a more unified look and purpose.
