  • I thought they were called chairs?

    Additional Details

The computer says that I am "on a roll" but I'm sure it's my chair. It's one of those funny ones that you kneel on, with your knees on a pad and butt on a platform, but it's not a roll, for sure. Who's correct?
  • A very weird issue whenever I do my laundry?

    Cleaning & Laundry - 8 hours ago

    Additional Details

I have been doing my own laundry my laundry since I was about 14 and ever since then I have always had problems. I do the laundry the same way everyone else in the house does and I wear normal clothes, but they continue to only happen to me. My shirts will have ridiculous bleach stains despite the fact that we do not even own bleach. I have done without detergent and this problem still happens. I've switched detergent a million times. What could it be? Then, today, when I pulled my laundry out, there were hundreds, maybe even thousands, of what looked like porcelain/glass/pottery shards in the bottom of my laundry. I do not own anything porcelain so there is no explanation for it. It got in my clothes, and seems to have disintegrated one of my shirts. Only one. Has anyone else ever experienced these issues?
  • Sump pump verus sewage pump.?

    Decorating & Remodeling - 10 hours ago

    Additional Details

We have a septic field and a sump pump in our basement. When we purchased this home in Southern Maryland it had a roughed in 1/2 bathroom in the basement too. We are ready to finish it with a shower, toilet and vanity sink. I discovered that the other two bathrooms on the upper floors, go straight to the septic field and not into the sump pump. Presently the only thing that goes into the sump, that is the washing machine discharge. When the sump gets to capacity its pumped up and into a 4" pipe that by gravity is dumped into the septic field. Someone told me that I would need to change out the sump pump and purchase a sewage pump in its place because most sump pumps do not handle solid waste. Is this true?

Greening your bedroom will help you create a healthy haven to get a good night's rest.

Greening your bedroom will help you create a healthy haven to get a good night's rest.

Green the nursery
Babies are the most vulnerable to chemicals because of their developing organs so greening the nursery is crucial. The biggest problem is products that off-gas VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) polluting the air and creating a toxic environment.

Start with the walls
Conventional paints contain neurotoxins that should be avoided in any infant room. Consider the enviro-friendly alternatives:

  • Milk Paint: contains natural ingredients like milk casein, clay, chalk and talcum and have no VOCs.
  • Low VOC: uses water as a carrier and the off-gas doesn’t hang around. Be careful since there are no standards in place. Low-VOC should be 50 g/L or less.
  • Zero-VOC: are those paints with less than 1-gram chemicals per litre.

    Watch the crib
Baby furniture is often made with pressed particleboard held together with a highly toxic formaldehyde-based glue that off gas. Wooden furniture is a better choice followed by recycled furniture at least two-years old so its no longer off gassing.

Plastic-covered foam crib mattresses are a deadly cocktail of chemicals (PVC, phthalates, antimony, arsenic) associated with asthma, reproductive disorders and cancer. Green baby’s bed green with a certified organic cotton or wool mattress fitted with organic cotton or bamboo sheets.

    Make your own bed green
Adult beds can also be toxic, containing even more chemicals such as PBDEs, a fire retardant linked to breast cancer. Slightly more expensive, eco-friendly mattresses use natural latex wrapped in organic cotton, wool, hemp or bamboo. It should also have a wooden frame made with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood.

    Sheets and covers
Avoid mattress covers with foam backing, particularly if you suffer from allergies and opt for a bamboo or hemp mattress pads. Both have natural anti-bacterial properties. Support fair trade cotton farmers while you sleep by investing in some organic cotton sheets. Currently commercial cotton uses 25 percent of the total world pesticides making it very toxic.

    Rest your head on green
Cheap polyester pillows as well as the new Memory Foam Pillows are made with chemicals linked to asthma, cancer and reproduction problems. The fire retardant used in these pillows has been banned in Europe. Get some earth-friendly pillows made with natural fibres:

  • Wool: Flame resistant with excellent moisture absorbency and naturally resistant to dust mites.
  • Feather/ Down Fill: Made from duck or goose feathers, these soft pillows are not recommended for allergy sufferers.
  • Buckwheat hull fill: contours to your head and neck with excellent insulation properties.
  • Natural latex: A by-product of the rubber tree, shredded rubber breathes and has anti-microbial properties.

    Walk on green
Wall-to-wall carpets can make any bedroom toxic. The plastic foam backing off-gases VOCs while the carpet fibres hold onto mould, chemicals, dust and bacteria. Even the shampoos used to clean them are unhealthy. Washable throw rugs made with natural wool, cotton, jute, sisal, sea grass, and coir are easier to keep clean and free of chemicals.

    Eco-friendly windows
Drapes or blinds can also contribute to indoor pollution. Curtains treated with fire-retardants with plastic backing should be replaced for bamboo blinds or curtains made with non

  • toxic fabrics. Natural hemp or silk blended with flax are easy-care choices.

    Reduce electro-magnetic waves
Rechargeable LED lights or stainless steel light with natural fabric shades will finish off your green decor. You want to reduce the electro

  • magnetic waves you’re exposed to while you are sleeping so ditch the digital clock radio and switch off the cell phone. A solar powered radio will get you some tunes and a saline
  • water powered alarm clock will get you up on time.
