White vinegar:
A mild disinfectant. Cuts grease, cleans glass, prevents mould.Baking soda: A great scouring powder.
Corn starch: Deodorizes carpets and helps remove greasy stains from fabrics.
Salt: A mild disinfectant and scouring powder.
Borax: A mild, alkaline salt. Emulsifies oils and acts as a gentle, abrasive disinfectant. Excellent on hard surfaces and laundry.
Lemon juice: Cuts grease and stains on mirrors, dishes, pots and pans.
Mild liquid soap or pure soap flakes: More earth-friendly than detergents.
Essential oils: Most citrus and herbal extracts have powerful antiseptic properties. Can be added to water.
Here are some homespun recipes courtesy of the Canadian Health Network:
All-purpose cleaner
In a bucket, mix cup pure soap or soap flakes with cup lemon juice and 4.5 litres hot water.
Disinfectant
Mix one teaspoon borax with two tablespoons white vinegar and a cup soap with two cups hot water.
Glass cleaner
Fill a spray bottle with cup white vinegar and 1 litre warm water. Tip: Use washable, reusable cloths instead of disposable paper towels, or wipe with loosely crumpled newspaper
Floor cleaner
In a bucket, mix cup of white vinegar with 4.5 litres warm water.
Tile cleaning
Use a firm-bristled brush with baking soda and the all-purpose cleaner (above).
