First, measure the length and the height of the wall that needs to be painted and multiply those measurements to get the square footage of the wall.
When purchasing your paint cans, remember that you might need two coats of paint depending on the colours you chose. One gallon of paint usually covers about 400 square feet, depending on the quality of the paint or the type of surface you're covering. So if you're painting a room with four 100-square foot walls, you'll need one gallon of paint. If you're painting a lighter colour over a darker wall, make that two gallons.
If you want an easier solution, companies like Sico, Benjamin Moore, Pantone, Rona and Home Depot have paint calculators on their websites to make paint shopping a breeze.
