Vines - Trumpet Vine 2

Q and A

By Groundskeeper

Question: Thursday, May 30, 2002

I am in zone 5 (Quispamsis, NB) and planted a trumpet vine last summer against a trellis (against the house). It is south-facing & gets at least 5-6 hours of direct sun. Regular watering & fertilizing occurred last summer. Trouble is, it now appears to be dead. I read somewhere that if you can't grow a trumpet vine, you should give up gardening. I seem to be doing well with all my other plants and vines. There are no green shoots at all on the trumpet vine, just dead looking branches from last year (it grew very well last year). Is there anything I can do, or should I buy another one and try again? I did not prune it at all as I read on the net that this was unnecessary. Can you offer any help/advice?

Answer:

Don't give up. This is a difficult plant to get to bloom and a late one to start showing. Scratch the bark to see if it is still green underneath. If it is you should see some growth pretty soon.
