Growing under lights -

4th year into this and have flats with lids. Everytime I take the lids off the seedlings are severely affected. I have read about and practice the placing off the lights, the basement maintains 18 C. This year I want to work without the lids but it seems to drastic a change. Any suggestions?

Answer:

Usually, once seeds have germinated the lid is removed from the flat and the young seedlings are placed under lights for between 12 and 14 hours per day at a distance of approximately 8". I have not heard of keeping the lids permanently on the flats, and imagine this would lead to build-up of excess moisture, lack of air circulation and rather weak and vulnerable plants.
