Trees and Shrubs - Mahonia Aquifolium

Q and A

By Groundskeeper

Question: Monday, June 17, 2002

We have recently removed a large, half dead shrub from our yard. I have no idea what it is: it had prickly holly-shaped leaves, yellow flowers in spring and small blue berries in the fall. The inside of the wood is bright yellow. Eventually we'd like to replant in its location. My question is - how should we best deal with the rather large root chunk. Is cutting it out good enough or do I have to worry about future growth from "beyond the grave"

Answer:

This sounds like Mahonia. Prune away the dead area and replant whatever you can salvage. If it lives - great, if it doesn't, and you like it, purchase another.
