Ivy on Walls

By Groundskeeper

Question: Tuesday, July 04, 2000

Can I grow English Ivy safely on a reclaimed brick house without damage done to the brick and mortar.

Answer:

Ivy has a detrimental effect on very old mortar, which was made different from modern cement. Over many years the clinging roots of established ivy, together with the weight, caused the mortar to crumble.
