HIBISCUS - Overwintering

Hibiscus Health

By Mark Cullen

Hibiscus cannot survive cold temperatures, they naturally grow in tropical regions of Zone 9 and they must be brought inside in the fall before the first frost. Make certain you are not transferring bugs too by first giving the plant a good spraying with an insecticidal soap such as ‘Trounce’, which will eliminate aphids.

If necessary, trim to a manageable size and place the plant in good light. Only water when the soil is almost dry and stop fertilizing. In February prune back hard and apply a water soluble fertilizer and step up on watering and fertilizing

In spring, repot if necessary and return outside when temperatures permit.
