Roses - Moving

Transplanting Meconopsis Betonicifolia

By Groundskeeper

Question: Tuesday, March 28, 2000

I am having major landscaping done around my house. They are going to be installing interlocking brick plus change my front garden. I need to move roses somewhere else in my garden on a temporary basis. I have a rose bush which I believe is a grandiflora which grows more than 4 feet. It grew over 5 feet one summer. Is it safe to move this one or will I lose it? I tried to grow a blue hymilian poppy in the shade near my rose bushes and it died. Where is the best spot to put this poppy? I have very little areas in my garden that gets direct sunlight most of the day.

Answer:

Prune before moving in the spring once the ground temperature is above 10º C. Wait until fall before transferring again, when the weather is cooler. Meconopsis betonicifolia (Himalayan Poppy) is hardy in Zones 7-9 so overwintering could be a challenge in your zone. This poppy likes to be planted in part shade/full sun in free-draining humusy soil. Best grown where moist summers prevail..
