Question: Monday, July 16, 2001
Well, now i've heard it all. My aunt says to put a tablespoon full of epsom salts around each of my tomatoe plants. Apparently this increases the size and quality of the fruit. Is this true or is it just an old wives' tale? If there is any truth to this, how often should you apply the epsom salts?
Answer:
This is perfectly true, Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate. To prevent blossom end rot, add 2 or 3 tablespoons per plant hole before planting. Sprinkle a tablespoon into the soil at the base of the plant every month. Epsom Salt will not build up in the soil, even if additional magnesium isn't required.
