Question: Thursday, June 08, 2000
I have a Blaze rose on the south side of our house, near the foundation. This year and last year, I notice that the leaves are very pale green. It didn't bloom much last year. It came through the winter fine, with hardly any cane killback. I have fertilized it liberally with your rose fertilizer containing chelated iron. I don't notice any deepening of the leaf colour. Another Blaze on the west side of the foundation (garage wall) has normal coloured leaves. What can I do to restore normal leaf colour?
Answer:
Neither rose should be too close to the foundation wall as the soil will be dry due to a lack of natural rain water and southern location brick walls retain a lot of heat. If the rose cannot be moved, amend the soil with a good organic compost or manure and ensure adequate regular watering is carried out together with fertilization.
