Question: Wednesday, April 18, 2001
I have a cottage garden in zone 5 (shuswap region bc). i'm a new gardener in a new garden. we are both 3 years old. i am ready to introduce annuals into my garden. I have a short list gained from Lois Hole's Bedding Plants book, very well done except for details on how long and when they will bloom. I have never even seen these plants in a garden so I need reassurance.
amaranthus (love lies bleeding)
datura
schizanthus
godetia
ice plant
brachycome
verbena
I have seen a hydrangea pruned to a standard small tree. I beleive it was a peegee. I would like to attempt to do this but need lots of guidance. it will be planted on a sunny spot.
Answer:
Most annuals will bloom all summer until frost. From your list the only exception is the schizanthus, and this will bloom for approximately one month. Hydrangea paniculata (Peegee Hydrangea) is readily available from garden centres, sold as a standard.
