Abutilon (Flowering Maple)

By Groundskeeper

Question: Friday, June 02, 2000

My question is about an Abutilon or Flowering Maple. When I bought this plant 4 years ago, it had the usual bell shaped flowers. After the first flowers faded, it 'rested' for a while and then budded up again. The problem isn't that it doesn't flower enough (it flowers non-stop), but I can't figure out why the flowers have changed shape. They now flat petals and look like saucers. Any advice?

Answer:

There are many varieties of abutilon, the flowers are showy, solitary and borne in leaf axils, usually drooping and often trumpet-shaped. The plant you have is possibly a hybridized plant which has over the years reverted to the original dominant variety.
