Dogs digging holes in the garden

By Groundskeeper

Question: Monday, March 13, 2000

Have new puppy. Likes to dig in the loose soil around our bushes and trees. Was thinking of placing flat shale type rocks aroud the base to discourage digging. Plentiful around here (Mississauga).Any reason why this would not be a good idea?

Answer:

Although this would probably stop your puppy from digging, and weeds from growing, flat shale rocks might prevent necessary water reaching the roots of your bushes and trees. Perhaps smaller rocks, eg riverstone, might be a more suitable material.
