Plant location

By Groundskeeper

Question: Wednesday, May 09, 2001

Would like to know of any kind or climbing rose's that grow in shaded areas that only get morning sun. Also is there are any kinds of Clamatis that will grow in these area's as well. Planted mini roses last year in this area and they grew very well and continue to do so at this time. Also question about direct sun and heat. Have hanging plant pots in front of garage in direct sun and up aginst brick wall and would like to put a heat and sun tolerant plant in this area but not sure of kind that will not wilt and die. Any suggestions ??

Answer:

1. For optimum growth and bloom roses require a minimum of six hours of sun each day. They will still survive with only four hours of sun but not produce such plentiful bloom.

2. Clematis enjoy warm heads and cool feet. In other words they require a cool root system. (Provide a perennial ground cover at the base of the clematis, if necessary). Most clematis will live happily in South, East and West locations, and some even North. Check the tag displayed with individual plants.

3. This situation calls for something like Pelargoniums (geraniums) and Helichrysum (Licorice Vine).
