Aphids

By Groundskeeper

Question: Thursday, November 09, 2000

I just noticed a few minutes ago that I found droplets of what I thought was water on a hibiscus plant ,the drop seems sticky,do you know what this could be and if so should I treat it now ?And how do I treat it.

Answer:

This is honeydew produced by aphids, producing a shiny, sticky film.Try a natural organic spray to control aphids in your home, such as Trounce, which will not have any harmful effect on your pets. Spray at least three times, at six-day intervals. If infestation is extreme, lift the hibiscus into a large garbage bag, spray and leave for twenty-four hours before removing. This will prevent aphids flying to other plants. Always spray plants before bringing them back into the home after their summer vacation outside.
