Perennials - Alcea rosea

Alcea rosea (Hollyhock)

By Groundskeeper

Question: Thursday, June 08, 2000

I moved 2 Hollyhocks from the front of our home (facing east) to the backyard and planted them on the north side where there is sun all day. I moved and replanted them using a root starter and mixed soil with a pro mix adding a little more fertilizer and peatmoss. Right now they are both droopy what else can I do? Do you think I planted them in the wrong location? Please advise.

Answer:

Hollyhocks dislike being moved and they are having a tough time recovering, especially if the weather is hot and sunny. In general hollyhocks are biennial but appear perennial as they easily cast seed.
