European chafer beetles

By Groundskeeper

Question: Tuesday, July 04, 2000

Our lupins have been lovely again this year. For the first time that we have witnessed, they became infested with 1 1/2" black elongated beetles with cone shaped ovipositors and chewing mandibles. Not only were they mating all over the flowers but they were chewing the blooms too.

Answer:

This is probably the European chafer beetle. Pick off into a bucket of water. Check the lawn for white grubs and treat, if necessary.
