Alcea (Hollyhock) - Rust

By Groundskeeper

Question: Wednesday, July 12, 2000

Something is eating my hollyhocks -- leaves are lacy -- flowers sparse and small. Any suggestions on what to do. Nothing else in my garden seems affected.

Answer:

This is most likely Hollyhock rust. This affects young leaves and stems early in the growing season. Infection takes places on wet leaves and is more severe in crowded plantings with little air circulation. Remove infected leaves and stems as they will over winter if left in the garden. Apply a protectant fungicide.
