Question: Tuesday, June 18, 2002
We purchased property that used to have a house on it. But the land was vacant when my husband and I purchased it. There is a rose bush that we decided to leave. That was about six years ago. Now this bush has become about 30 by 30 patch of various size bushes. Some bloom and some don't, and every year there has been many blooms and they are all small but there has been the occasional bloom that is 5 inches across. The main bush is the tallest about 6 feet tall, and has larger branches. My question is what do I do with this bush or bushes that keep spreading more and more.
Answer:
If you don't like them dig them up.
If you wish to keep them give them their own space and start maintaining them - pruning in the spring, spray with dormant oil to remove over-wintering insects and diseases, fertilize, water and mulch them and, if necessary, give them winter protection.
