You can create a great-looking piece of art by simply framing something with graphic appeal or personal meaning. Many home stores, including Ikea, carry ready-made frames in different sizes at reasonable prices. If you choose a three-dimensional item, you’ll need to use a frame that’s deep enough. The object will also need to be pinned or glued in place.
2. Rent It
Some art galleries have rental programs that allow you to bring home select pieces for a length of time. This is a great way to introduce a range of unique artwork into your home for less and a great idea for a special occasion. If you fall in love with something and want to buy it, most galleries will deduct a portion of the rental fee.
3. Go Monthly
Like any other big investment, some galleries will let you pay for art in installments, allowing you to handle the cost over a more manageable period of time.
4. Start Small
Begin your collection with smaller-sized pieces – they are less of a space or price commitment. Plus, miniatures can be grouped together for big impact.
5. Be Original
Hand-done prints are often less expensive but no less authentic. Printmaking includes etchings, silkscreens, intaglio and lithography. Always ask the dealer if your print is hand-done and don’t be fooled: Limited Edition can mean a limit of 10,000, which is really just a good-quality poster. Some photographic work can also prove more affordable than paintings.
6. Explore
Go to local art fairs and shows. Exhibitions at your local college or art school are also a great idea. You can often find a great deal on a young, talented artist and maybe even invest in the next big name.
7. Track Down an Agent
Look for artist representatives like Art Works in Vancouver, Tu Gallery in Edmonton, or Art Interiors in Toronto who represent a wide range of new and established artists. You can always find something great at a good price.
8. Make it Big
If you have a limited budget but want a big piece, use a big frame. Large matting and a simple frame can make a small piece spectacular.
9. Create a Sense of Space
Hang a piece of art using a wire or rod suspended from the ceiling. It will help fill a blank wall, give the piece a bigger presence and save you from going big on the frame.
