Special Treatment

Simple tips and tricks to help you find the perfect window treatment for every room of the house.

By Nicole Keen

Does your new place need a quick and easy revamp? You can instantly transform a room by switching the window treatments. “Your window coverings can change the whole look of a room,” says Mary Dobson, Levolor Window Fashions spokesperson in Canada. “You can even use different operating options to change the look of a room by minimizing or even completely blocking out the light in a room.” Indeed, your decision to purchase traditional fabric drapes or sleek, modern cellular blinds depends upon a variety of factors. To find the perfect window treatment for your room, consider the following:

How much light do you want in the room? In the bedroom, for instance, you may want drapes or blinds with an extra layer to keep out the sunlight.

How much privacy does the room require? Thicker blinds or curtains are probably a good idea in the bathroom, for example, or on a window that overlooks a main street or faces another building directly.

Do you want the room to appear larger or smaller? In general, light colours make a room feel bigger. To maximize a small space, stick to window treatments that match your wall colour as closely as possible. Contrarily, to make a room feel cozier, choose window coverings in a contrasting colour.

Do you have lots of space near the window? If it is a tight space, you might be better served by streamlined blinds instead of bulky draperies. On the other hand, if you have a small window in a tall, bare wall, you can add warmth and dimension with some full drapes.

How much maintenance are you prepared for? Plastic horizontal blinds can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, whereas heavy tapestries will most likely require professional dry cleaning. What type of window covering you choose is definitely influenced by the amount of time and money you are willing to invest in upkeep.
