Add style to your newlywed nest with these hot interior trends for 2008.

Moving into your newlywed nest can be extremely exciting. However, finding a decor scheme that suits both your tastes may be a little tricky. To help you sort through the multitude of interior options available, we scoped out the hottest trends for 2008 and how you can incorporate them into your home.

Eco-chic
Green is hot right now and will continue to be for the next few years, mainly because of the strong focus and concern for our environment. This trend is all about creating spaces that work in harmony with nature. To achieve this look, start by incorporating products and services that reduce the use of non-renewable resources. Switch to compact fluorescent lamps, use energy efficient appliances and ensure your furniture and accessories are Free Trade items. Complete your look by adding natural materials and textiles – rattan and recycled aluminum are design favourites – for a sleek and sophisticated look. Bamboo is another eco-friendly material that’s being incorporated into everything from countertops to furniture and even spun into fabric for upholstery.

Colour Combos
The classic black and white interior has reinvented itself once again for 2008. Its chic simplicity is being intermixed with everything from textured area rugs and chandeliers to patterned wallpaper and throw pillows. To achieve this look, moderation is key. Go for solid black and white accessories rather than committing to a sizeable, patterned statement piece, like a sofa. For additional punch, add an accent colour like aqua, Kelly green or canary yellow. If black and white is too bold for you, lavender, pink-violets and magentas are also fresh and sophisticated, especially when combined with slate grays. This colour combination gives a calm yet stylish ambience, perfect to relax and unwind in.

Scandinavian
With the steady popularity of Swedish design darlings IKEA and other Scandinavian-based furniture stores, the new year will mark a continuation in sleek and contemporary home styles. This decor trend is all about clean lines and minimalism. White is a staple and rooms are kept monochromatic with few accenting colours. The furniture is made of lightly stained wood and designed in organic shapes teamed with steel and leather. The entire focus is on simplicity, but functionality and quality are also important in achieving this style.

Exotic Influences
Moroccan influences are strong this year and can add splashes of culture and historical character to your home. Rooms can be transformed through the use of dramatic, jewel-toned colors, lovely exotic patterns and elegant, textured fabrics. To add a subtle Moroccan flair to your nest, incorporate statement pieces like handwoven rugs (placed on the floor or hung up on the wall) and intricately designed, heavy wooden or wrought-iron furniture. Use a rich and vibrant colour scheme of oranges and reds or deep blues and sparkling greens. For accessories, it’s all about excess. Use fabrics in abundance and place oversized pillows generously throughout your space to create your own Moroccan oasis.
