MONTREAL - Hungry bears are lurking near suburban Quebec homes after poor summer weather caused a shortfall in their usual diet.
The animals have been spotted in the Laurentian and Lanaudiere regions north of Montreal raiding garbage cans, compost bins and bird feeders.
"We've seen an increase in the numbers of bears this year," said Lieutenant Francois Brazeau, with the St-Jerome wildlife protection agency, which has received some 500 bear alerts for the area.
"It's mainly due to the lack of food in the forests. There are no berries now so they're coming closer and closer to homes to forage in the garbage."
Some 30 intruders have been captured and returned to the forest so far this year. Another dozen had to be killed because they showed aggression.
This week alone, eight of the animals were captured by wildlife officials.
As yet, none of the bears have tussled with humans.
"Look, you always have to careful around a bear," Brazeau said.
"But right now they're just looking for food and we haven't had any attacks so far."
