I made a little box out of wood about a foot by 6 inches with hinges so it could open, of memories of my dog who recently passed away. I made a hole in the ground of my woods so only the top is visible unless opened. Will it get ruined by rain, or insects, or any other thing? If so, how could i protect it?
  • Is this a wise decision or a waste of money?

My husband is going to retire from the Navy in just over 5 years. We've decided that we want to remodel any house that we buy ourselves. I know this is a lot of work, but we really enjoy wood work, and fixing things. There is a program offered at a local JC that offers a course in construction. It's a two semester certificate program. I've spoken to my husband, and he said that we should take the course together. The course teaches heating/air conditioning, walls, windows, floors, roofing, plumbing, dry walling, electrical, wiring, finishing etc. Pretty much from building a house from the ground up. When we find our house, we will have help from my brother, because he's been in construction for years. Does anyone think that this is a wise decision or a waste of money? Please no rude answers, thank you.

Had a new Payne 80% efficiency furnace installed 5 days ago Worked fine for 3 hours. House dropped 7 degrees below set temp. Finally at 10:30 kicked on blew cold for 30 seconds, shut off, came on 1.5 minutes later and blew warm for about 4 minutes, then blew cold for about 5 then shut off. Did not run long enough to bring temp up to where it should be. Service came out next day, reset furnace, checked thermostat, put cheaper thin filter in, opened up all our vents ran for 3 cycles ok and then back to the same problem. Now it comes on willy nilly but only for the 30 sec, 4 minute, 5 minute thing so house never warms up. He is supposed to be back today but needless to say this is getting old and cold real fast.

  • Bedroom ideas - please help - those who know color well?

    Decorating & Remodeling - 16 hours ago

    Additional Details

I have a queen sized bed that is black and a leaning bookshelf w/ desk that is black, a small hanging on wall cd player that is modern) and a medium tall jewelry armori that is burgundy with light asian influneced floral pattern (like a vine thing) and a matching accent dresser that has the same on opposite side of room... a touch (just a hint) of asian influence in the minimal decor on walls - mostly white and black with small amount of red -- the rest of the room has candle holder and candles hung up (its hard to describe, but its a romantic kind of subtle look.. I need two ideas: 1. what color to paint the walls - right now they are neutral like a beige color and blah - I was thinking a blue or lavendar - something modern but not over the top - but I am nopt sure either color would go with the reds I have in the room 2. what can I put on the leaning shelves (I love books but I have an area of my house for books and too many books might make the room look cluttered) any ideas for simple shelf decor that keep the ambiance romantic - I already have candles in the room.. should I just take the shelf out and put a chair or lounger in that space instead? I know its hard to picture - so if you can give me some feedback or ideas I can brainstorm.. thanks. 1.

Energy-smart design can cut your bills and leave your home looking gorgeous

By Melissa Rayworth, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

When decorating our homes, we tend to consider things like beauty and comfort, the durability of pieces we might buy or the image they project. But how many of us stop to consider our energy bills?

Energy-smart design goes way beyond choosing Energy Star-rated appliances or switching to compact fluorescent bulbs, although both are good ideas. Today's experts see opportunities to conserve energy in nearly every aspect of home design.

There are "so many things that look gorgeous and totally save you money," says interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

We asked Flynn and fellow designers Mallory Mathison and Janine Carendi to share their energy-wise secrets:

WINDOWS

Add a layer of heavy "blackout" lining to the back of draperies (DIY or hire a seamstress), Flynn says. "It makes the drapes hang better, and gives them a richer, more full look," he says. The barrier helps keep out noise pollution, as well as light in summer and cold in winter, he says.

As you do with clothing, insulate with layers: Mathison suggests layered window treatments "with a wool sheer and then an outer panel" of heavier fabric.

Check all windows for drafts, Carendi says, and plug holes, or consider replacing windows or repairing window frames. "You would be shocked how much heat you lose," she says, from windows that aren't properly sealed or insulated.

All three designers recommend UV-protectant film, made by 3M to keep heat out in summer and protect furniture from fading (bonus: some versions also enhance security).

LIGHTING/ELECTRONICS

Swapping out bulbs is a great energy-saving first step. The earliest generations of compact fluorescent bulbs gave off a harsh light that turned off some consumers, but newer versions offer softer, more appealing light.

Next, Carendi recommends replacing old dimmers with energy-smart models (she likes Lutron).

The designers also suggest using power strips or other devices that make it simpler to switch off electronics at night. Eliminating energy usage from items you don't use overnight can provide real savings.

FLOORS

Add thick, warm, wool area rugs. Warm feet may help you resist cranking up the heat, says Mathison, and the sight of a plush rug can make you feel cosier. You can keep lightweight rugs for summer, but swap them out when temperatures drop: "If you have standard sea grass rugs," says Mathison, "then in winter try adding a wool or cotton flat-weave rug." She also mentions radiant-heated floors.

To warm up stairs and hallways, Flynn has a neat tip: Avoid the expense of having custom rugs made for these narrow spaces by buying a rectangular area rug and having it cut into strips measured to the correct width. Have the strips bound (most carpet stores will do it or recommend a binder in the area) and then attached end-to-end to create a single piece the right length.

APPLIANCES

It can be wise to invest a bit more upfront for items with a good Energy Star rating.

Also, says Carendi, "train yourself to look beyond styles of appliances that you're comfortable with. Some of the European brands are highly energy-efficient, but they may not have a look that's as comfortable to you at first."

Another way to conserve: Flynn has several clients who have installed built-in coffee/espresso systems that use a predetermined amount of water. Rather than using the power and water needed to brew an entire pot of coffee each morning, they brew a single cup.

Reply to Canadian: I say bring on the HST (5%+8%). Now we're just paying GST on energy, but this will be replaced by the HST. The most energy efficient will pay the least tax. The most wasteful and those who live in older homes that have not been updated will pay more. They plan to give rebates at first to ease the pain.

Just wait in a few months the Ontario Liberal party with the push of the Federal Cons will begin charging an extra 8% to our heat and electricity. REMEMBER this when they are trying to get re-elected. Write to your local and provincial MPP's and let them know we cannot afford another tax.

The day I become so cheap I won`t turn up the heat, or brewing 1 cup of coffee at a time is the day I can no longer afford my home. Being cheap makes no sense.Do you all know we are going to die someday? Why live frugally and die that way when you can be warm, have a full pot of coffee , and enjoy it while your still breathing instead of leaving that part up to your heirs..rest assured, they will enjoy it!!

I live in a large 2200 sq ft semi-detached home. Our hydro bill is about $600....for an entire year! Around $50 per month. Gas bill is less than $1000 per year including taxes and all charges. Last year we installed some solar air heating panels and that helped save about 30% off already low gas usage. We have energy star appliances. We use a lot of CFL bulbs. We use a programmable thermostat. Our hydro bill would be lower, but we do some space heating when it makes sense. This keeps our gas bill lower than it would be. I can't imagine living in a place that requires so much energy. I will never sign a contract for gas or hydro, but I do own shares in Just Energy and it's been one of my best investments. The dividends pay for my hydro bill.

Sounds like all the 416ers are paying through the teeth for energy. That's the price you pay for living in a run down old home just so that you can be "close to everything." If you don't like it, move to the 905.

I wish I only had $200 electric bills to struggle with. Mine are often close to $600 and I have done everything I can think of to conserve. Even had an electrician check out everything. It turns out the culprit is a company called Universal Engergy (now Just Energy). It is bad enough that I was gullible enough 4 years ago to sign a fixed rate contract (of course in excess of Hydro One charges), I recently found out Universal who supplies nothing and doesn't even do the billings, charges what is called a balancing charge. This is a charge on top of their fixed rate which is itself in excess of Hydro One's rate! It appears this balancing charge is a license to charge whatever they like. As us consumers struggle to save energy and costs, these so called "Price Protection" corporations are picking our pockets. Think of it. How can there be such a thing as price protection? There has to be a loophole for them somewhere or they would cease to exist if they paid more than they are charging. These companies pay out handsome salaries in addition to dividends to shareholders and yet supply no product. Where does that money come from but on a spread between what they pay to the real supplier and what they charge the public. What ever happened to morals and ethics. Guess money out weighs them.

    1) programmable thermostat 2) turn down your heat overnight 3) tape up all the vents in the basement where heat can escape I went from 2,589 cu metres of natural gas in 2005 to under 1,700 in 2009. And the house is 2,900 sq. ft. Trust me, it works

montly hydro and gas bill charges have gone up significantly over the last few years and any tips to help reduce my bills are appealing. I have implemented many tips but still struggle with monthly hydro bills over $200, 1/2 of which costs are delivery, regulatory charges, debt retirement costs and finally GST. All these energy costs eradicate a middle income family and reduce disposable income! There are no government subsidies for middle income families; we are on our own to support our families, pay for childrens education etc....
