With the holidays approaching, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to play Santa. There are the usual ones like with your family and very close friends. But then there are those situations many people find a little unnerving: the office Secret Santa.
Some people find these fun and start shopping for their Secret Santa recipient months in advance, scanning stores and online sites for just the perfect gift. Others find the whole prospect makes their tinsel shrivel. So, in the spirit of giving, here are some tips to help you become a smilin’ Santa instead of a sour Scrooge at the office.
When given the opportunity to join your office Secret Santa, do it! Partaking in the event is great for morale and shows you are a team player. Having said that, don’t feel it’s a competition to see who can give the most outrageous or expensive gift. Office gift exchanges often adhere to budgets and you should make sure you follow those guidelines.
Let’s say you have a $25 spending limit. You can create a small gift bag filled with little goodies your happy recipient will accept with glee. There’s also a gift card for a favourite local coffee place or maybe a cyber certificate to purchase music online if your Secret Santa is one who never removes their iPod. And when it comes to buying for the boss, make sure you stick to the budget so you don’t look like you’re trying to buy your way into the next round of promotions.
Remember, these are fun and can be a great opportunity to build camaraderie in the office and even start new friendships. So, be tasteful when giving and always show appreciation for a gift received, don’t blow your budget and most of all – have fun!
