The Healthy Plate

Back to reality

Even virtuous, slightly holier than thou, professional home economists can take a nose dive off the old health wagon. After a summer of cottaging, drinking Scotch, and being a lazy lump its back to reality. It was fun while it lasted but another month of this and it's back to my fat pants.

Statistics prove that successful people get back on that horse every time they fall off until they do in fact succeed. It's not the amount of times you hit the ground its how many times you rise back up. And so I'm rising. I am heaving my jellylike thighs off the couch and hitting the health food trail, again.

In past summers after a weekend of frivolity I used to freak out Monday mornings when I tipped the Toledo's into a new weight class. Eating like a gurgitator (food competitor) imbibing like a flapper in prohibition, and sitting with my ass glued to a deck chair wasn't making nice with Mr. Scale. So for the rest of the week it was hard core healthy eating, abstinence, and training like a triathlon till Friday rolled around and the next thing I knew I was getting third helpings at the all-you-can-eat BBQ.

Moderation is a great word and even a better concept. One I started practicing more often.

This year I didn't take seconds, had my one smart drink okay or maybe two, passed on the chips, and jumped in the lake swimming, canoeing or kayaking. And I broke even. Didn't gain or loose anything. To me that was a brilliant success.

September has always been my New Year. It's back to school, back to my regular life, and back to paying the bills. So although I'll miss going to my friend's cottage, the fun, sunset boat rides, canoe adventures, kayak trips, jumping off the dock, fabulous meals, smart drinks, I'm looking forward to my pathetic boring life? Hold the phone, how many more sleeps till June?
