Hi, I am 56 years old and I exercise 3-to 4 times a week . I don't eat salt, sugar or oil. I gained 10 lbs since last year,  I was 125lbs.  How can I lose even though I don't eat lots? I am always hungry and shaky. I really need your help. I have to get rid of that 10lbs soon.  Thank you.

Hi Tibi,

With the little information that you have provided me, I can tell that you are probably not consuming enough, or the right foods to get your body through the day, let alone lose weight. When you body is in starvation mode and begging for nutrients it actually stores fats rather than metabolize them in fear that this famine will be long term. Of course the longer you starve your body the further the damage to your metabolism and it will take that much longer to get it working effectively again.

The fact that you are feeling shaky and hungry throughout the day likely indicates that your body is lacking in essential fats and nutrients. When you say that you don?t have oil I assume that you probably stay away from fat in general? Please remember that your body needs fats to function properly. You just need to differentiate between good and bad fats. Steer clear of trans fats and hydrogenated oil, but consume healthy fats from nuts, organic meats, wild fish, organic oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, etc?The low-fat and no-fat stuff in your supermarket is usually garbage laced with artificial sweeteners and tons of other stuff you can?t even pronounce. Of course an excess of fats is not good either, so just practice moderation with your portions.

Believe it or not your body actually needs salt as well, just not the fake over-processed stuff that is commonly found in most processed products and on the supermarket shelf. Unrefined salt is 85% sodium chloride and 15% other essential minerals. Sodium chloride is essential for human function. One of its most important functions is to regulate hydration in the body. Don?t be afraid to consume unrefined salt such as Himalayan in moderation.

It?s great that you are exercising, but the type of exercise and fueling your body properly after exercise is crucial.

Yours in Health

I am currently weighing at 226lbs (@5'6") and I exercise 7 days a week (broken up into blocks of cardio, walking and weight training), eat several small portions (eats, vegs, grains) throughout the day - look at a chocolate bar, I feel as if I gained 100lbs. I'm constantly on the move aside from exercising. I have a spouse and 3 children, 1 of which has a learning disorder, whom I to take him back and forth to the hop for therapy. I don't believe in fad diets (as I know they don't work), but have been on several diets prescribed to me from a reg dietitian in the last 10 yrs that added more weight than I was able to take it off. I have no health concerns (whatsoever), with everything that I'm doing right I still don't see results. I have had people tell me to cut my eating down, but doing that wouldn't work since I'm already eating smaller meals. I'm so frustrated that when I being my concerns to my GP, that I inquired about weight reduction surgery, but he's against it. He said that the specialist tell me I have to lose 10% of my weight in order to have the treatment and that at best is only a band-aid for my problem. I'm also sick of 'skinny people' tell me I should exercise more and drop the snickers bar.
