Why do you want to lose weight?

I'll bet there are a million reasons — not just because you want to be healthier.

List them — list them all and see if that stimulates you to, in a new and different way, take action. Sometimes I try and try and try to get something going and it just doesn't happen until someone says something that hits me a certain way and all of a sudden: I must do it now.

Here's my example: I have tried on and off for years to give up sweets/ sugar. I have wanted to give it up because it seems to have an unhealthy hold on me like — I want to eat the whole box of cookies, not just one or two like everyone else seems to easily be able to do, or I want to eat dessert even though I am already totally full after dinner.

Sometimes it seems manageable and sometimes it feels like a curse but when someone said to me recently — stop eating sugar, and you'll find out what you really need, what you have been denying yourself for so long — well, it hit me hard. I never really thought of it that way, though I do suspect that by eating so much of it (sugar numbs me), I must be avoiding something.

So try this: state every reason you want to lose weight (or stop sugar, or stop drinking, or whatever) and see if it stimulates you to do whatever it is you know you need to do, in a new and more powerful way.

Here are some reasons that I have heard. I want to lose weight:
--To get a man
--To look good in my wedding pictures
--To make my girlfriends jealous, respect me, or admire me
--To fit into my small size wardrobe
--To get my boyfriend back
--To get a job
--To have more energy
--To stop beating myself up
--To finally do what I have been saying I would do for over a decade

Got your own unique reasons?

You never really know what will get the ball rolling. Once I got off sugar, I started learning a lot about me!

I am 45 yrs old woman and have been complaining bout being overweight my whole life. Even at my skinniest at 146lbs - I have said I was fat and now I am not kidding after a 100lbs weight gain now I know I am morbidly obese. My body aches from head to toe litterally, my feet to my head hurts all over. I have a wonderfully supportive husband who loves me despite my size, still wants to be with me. Except I am tired of being overweight, I am not motivated but yes I would like to be fit, as you can see this victim crap works for me. my payoff is that I get to be fat and complaining. My spiritual and mental beings are fit, except I need my inside to match my outside. I know I have work to do, I need help I can't help myself when it comes to food, I just plain love to eat and lots of it. can anyone relate to me.....?????? If you can please help me......

I am 44, single mom of two teens. I have lost 70lbs with 40 more to go!!!! I have come to learn it's really quite easy to get with it. Really. I eat when i am hungry...rumbly tummy I eat whatever i want..whatever....burger and fries..no deprivation here. I put my hands under my butt until I have finished my mouthful, no cramming it all in in minutes. ENJOY whatever it is I am eating. STOP when i am FULL!!!!!!! Gee who knew it was so easy. I am finally free of I can't have that or I shouldn't eat that. I know that even after I have eaten if I am still hungry!!!!! I can eat again. The trick is to acknowledge if it is really hunger or just boredom when the food hits my lips. I feel hot and get compliments on how I am looking and believe me that is spurring me on to my goal...because I am going to be too sexy for myself..LOL!!!!! We can do it....never give up...ever. luv Carmella
