  • How can I be confident in myself?

Mental Health - 7 hours ago

    Additional Details

It's a pathetic question, I know. But, seriously. I have two younger brothers who are horrible to me. They will call me fat, talk about tampons, call me ugly, and stupid to my face. It's terrible, and it's really hurting me. Honestly, it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't do it where they do it. I'll be walking to the bus, and they will put down the window and yell in front of EVERYONE, "Hurry up fatty!" Or, "Run, bitch, run!" It's embarrising. How can I stop it form hurting me so much? I have come home crying the past two days, and I'm stuck. I don't know what to do. Please help me :(

  • Do I have the right to insist on starting treatment regardless of what the doctor wants?

    STDs - 9 hours ago

    Additional Details

I've got HIV and Hep C from idu, infected in 2006 diagnosed 2009. My CD4 count is 450 and T8 ratio is .33 unknown VL (they've continually screwed up the tests as results are time-limited and the nearest lab that can handle it is over an hour away) I want to start treatment on HAART immediately as from every study I've read & from talking to people I know who are similarly afflicted that guidelines are about to change at a CD4 count of 500 soon. I live in a rural, conservative area, and the specialist is no different, to her if the book says 350 then treatment should be withheld until it reaches that point,. Knowing how I feel physically and from symptoms that have begun to appear I think it's best to begin right away. Do I have the right to insist on treatment regardless of what she thinks?

  • To the girls who had eating disorders?

    Other - Diseases - 20 hours ago

    Additional Details

Soooo I used to have an eating disorder and i cant seem to get past the whole gaining weight issue. Before i had an eating disorder I was naturally skinny but i still thought i was fat. But now that i've recovered from bulimia nervosa I've gained a lot of weight in my eyes. so now i'm no longer skinny, I'm thin. And to those who have had eating disorders i bet you remember being complimented on being "thin" or "healthy" and considered that as being called fat. Anyway, how can i become more comfortable in my skin, although i still want to lose weight?? For me accepting my body the way it is, is hard......GAAAHHH its kind of annoying because i can look at other girls who are bigger than me and see the beauty in them but not in me....

Lots of rest, good diet could help prevent infection with swine flu

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

Here are a few tips to help prevent infection with H1N1 influenza and to lessen the impact if you do get sick:

-Get lots of rest. Eat a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Vitamin supplements, especially vitamins A, C and D, can help boost the immune system. Exercise regularly.

"Anything that helps our immune systems stay robust helps prevent us getting infected with any disease," says Dr. Bonnie Henry, an infectious disease expert at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. "So the whole healthy lifestyle does help prevent you from getting sicker and in some cases can prevent you getting sick in the first place."

-Do not smoke. Tobacco use makes a person more vulnerable to respiratory infections, including influenza.

-Wash hands with soap and water frequently. Use alcohol-based gel if soap and water are not available.

-Avoiding crowded environments like theatres, malls and public transit, if possible, could help prevent exposure to swine flu.

"There is some evidence that social distancing - that is avoiding crowded places during the height of the pandemic - may be protective," says Dr. Andrew Simor, an infectious disease specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

If a person is at high risk for complications from H1N1 influenza because of pregnancy or an underlying medical condition, "it's something to think about," Simor advises.

-When the pandemic flu vaccine becomes available, get inoculated.

-Ask your doctor whether you should be immunized against pneumococcal infection, the most common complication of both seasonal and pandemic H1N1 influenza.

The pneumococcal vaccine is routinely given to children aged five and younger. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization also recommends that the following individuals get vaccinated: all Canadians over 65; those aged between two and 65 with diabetes, lung diseases like COPD, a compromised immune system, and heart, kidney or liver disease.

-If you do come down with swine flu, stay home.

"The most important thing if you're sick with the flu is not to go into work, not to go to public places where you might expose other people who are at higher risk," stresses Simor.

"I think our society really has to rethink the concept of work ethic in light of having a safe or healthy workplace," he says. "It doesn't do any good for someone to come in to try to get their work done when they're sick with the flu and then end up infecting the people they work with."

"If someone has symptoms of the flu, that's a setting where it's quite appropriate for them to phone in sick and not go to work."

To Wunderbarmom: Only having the disease confers immunity for life. Vaccines do not.

The whole hysteria is becoming psychological. Really, it's only in the mind. When someone coughs or sneezes on a very crowded public transit, people would automatically react by immediately looking at the opposite direction, even distancing from the fellow or covering his,her nose. Can't blame 'em. They're afraid of getting sick. Thinking too much of the deadly flu can make one get sick!

Although it's good to get the H1N1 flu shot, but people who get it can still get sick. My daughter got her's yesterday at a walk in clinic and the doctor said when you get the shot, you will get sick. Now when they said that the swine flu will be bad this fall, they are speaking it into existance. If you say it's going to be bad, it will be bad. Maybe the Health organization should have said, "it won't be bad" and maybe it wouldn't be. If you are healthy, do things to stay healthy and you will be.

Swine flu is a hype campaign to sell drugs. 35-45,000 die annually in the US alone of seasonal flu...this is all vaccine-selling hype. Many more die annually from properly prescribed prescription meds and medical errors. We hear next to nothing about these many deaths, but front page about each individual flu death recently. 80-90% flu deaths so far are of immune or respiratory-compromised people. Think about it!

In response to Thefour20bunny's comment on the swine flu pandemic. The writer states that we shouldn't panic if we didn't last year. But I guess the obvious question would be, were people dying from the virus last year? So in fact, this virus is more fatal than last years flu outbreak. It is good to get educated on this subject, so we can defend ourselves, our children and grandparents. I haven't had a flu shot in years, but went through the flu season often getting a touch of the virus in some instances. However, this years virus, being fatal than most, does need attention for sure. It does say something in the Bible about this pandemic, it's quite a sign thats for sure.

There is some misinformation about the severity, occurrence and risk regarding H1N1 in Canada - for example: the median age of Canadians dying from H1N1 is 48 (since August 30th) and before that, it was 51. This means that 50 percent of deaths were above the median and 50 percent below. The percentage of deaths with underlying conditions is 77% (since August 30th) and 74% before that. Each week (Friday at 4pm); there is a cumulative update on Canada's Public Health Agency website, "FluWatch" available at http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/fluwatch/09-10/index-eng.php - lots of good, relatively accurate information from a reliable source.
